The London Marathon is the UK’s most popular marathon and one of the World Marathon Majors. The event was first run on 29 March 1981 and has been held in the spring of every year since. Every year 38,000 runners take to the historic streets of the English capital to challenge themselves and more importantly, to raise money for their favourite charities. To gain entry in this incredibly popular marathon you must either enter the ballot, apply for a charity entry place or if you live outside of the UK, apply for a spot with one of the official tour groups.
The first half of the route runs just south of the Thames through Greenwich and Blackheath. After crossing the river on Tower Bridge, runners pass some of the capital's famous landmarks, including the Coca Cola London Eye and the Tower of London, before finishing in front of Buckingham Palace. With such vast and impressive scenery, it's no wonder the organisers have dubbed it a "historical jog around London".
