Gran Fondo NJ offers a choice of route lengths and timed hill segments that wind their way through some of New Jersey’s best cycling roads. Starting and ending in historic Morristown, NJ this combination of bike touring and timed climbs attracts a wide range of cyclists from the casual weekend rider to the well-trained endurance athlete. Gran Fondo NJ provides plenty of challenges to its participants without the added pressure, stress and inherent dangers of a bike race. We do not provide Start/Finish timing. The competitive aspect of the event is limited to only the timed climbs on the four longer routes. Cyclists can feed their competitive needs while fighting gravity on these climbs, and take it easy on the sections of route and our rest stops in between.
Gran Fondo NJ 2017 offers five routes of increasing levels of challenge, from the extremely challenging Gran Fondo down to the relatively relaxed Breve Fondo. We were one of, if not the first Gran Fondo to offer a Breve length route for those not up to the challenge of a longer route, but wanting to partake in the festive atmosphere of a Gran Fondo. All routes begin and end in historic Morristown, New Jersey.
With hundreds of miles of scenic back country roads to choose from, you will be amazed at how great the cycling is here in Northern New Jersey, just 45 miles from New York City. In fact, our 62 mile Medio Route was selected by the editors of Bicycling Magazine in their list of “The 50 Best Rides in America.” We have purposely chosen a challenging course, whether you are new to cycling and testing your legs on our 18-mile Breve route, or have signed up for the Gran Fondo route - 107 miles of seemingly endless climbs and amazingly beautiful scenery. For the most part, our timed climbs are less traveled back-country roads – our participants have even commented that the Black River, Rocky Run and Frog Hollow climbs are naturally air-conditioned by the forest canopy and the streams running beside them. Riding through quaint country towns on a quiet Sunday morning, you will see massive estates, quiet forests, small working farms and if lucky, the occasional deer or black bear wandering through the woods. We have designed our four distances with as much “overlap” as possible, so that everyone can enjoy the experience of the Mass Start and the camaraderie of riding together and finishing as a group, regardless of which distance you choose.
