The Big Sur International Marathon is one of America’s most scenic marathons – taking place on California’s spectacular Pacific coast. Whilst it’s not as famous as some of it’s bigger east coast counterparts, Big Sur is arguably one of the countries most spectacular marathon courses. Taking you along the winding wide-open roads of Highway 1 from Big Sur to Carmel the coastline route provides plenty of welcome distractions. The Marathon is held in April every year and attracts 4,500 participants.
Due to the immense popularity of the event and the limited field size, the marathon now offers the majority of registration spots through random drawings. Applications for drawings will be accepted during July the year before the event and winners will be announced no later than August.
Participants are put on buses from Carmel to Big Sur on the morning of the event so that they can start and finish their day at the same location.
